Gentle effective moisturiser
Shea butter is a gentle and effective moisturiser. It contains oleic acid, a saturated fatty acid which is highly compatible with the sebum naturally produced by our skin, which means it's readily absorbed and is said to help the absorption of other active ingredients.
Shea butter is the ivory-coloured fat that's extracted from the nut of the Vitellaria tree (Vitellaria Paradoxa), which is similar to an oak, and usually grows wild.
Shea nuts are dried and crushed before being roasted and pressed into a slick liquor. This is then whipped and kneaded, before the shea butter is skimmed from the top, creating an high quality ingredient.
When used in its solid form, shea butter helps to naturally preserve products as part of an expertly balanced formula. This is achieved by solid shea butter creating a tight emulsion that does not leave space for microbes to move around and grow. This reduces the amount of free water in the product, naturally keeping products fresh as well as delivering a range of benefits to the skin.
The organic shea butter used in Lush products is refined, a mechanical process that neutralises both the colour and aroma. It is bought from a Ghanaian producer who works directly with women’s groups, not to be confused with the Ojoba women’s collective who produce Fair Trade shea butter.
