This guide is intended as advice for applying for a role with LUSH Retail or Manufacturing. There are two things to keep in mind when applying for a role with LUSH:
Firstly, it is important to understand that managers looking for different qualities at different times of year. For example, a large store in November could be looking for people who are fast paced and confident, whereas during a different time of year they might be looking for someone with great stock management skills. Be sure to read the job advertisement thoroughly before applying. The most important thing from the application and throughout the recruitment stage is that you know your skills and are able to represent yourself clearly.
Secondly, it’s important to know that some Hiring Managers receive hundreds of applications for one role. We are fortunate to have so many amazing people apply for positions at LUSH. Although we can't place everyone in roles, we hope these tips can help you to improve your chances!
How to apply
All current job openings are shown on our website. Please review our job advertisements for guidelines about closing dates. If a role is not on our website, then the role has unfortunately closed. We always keep job ads open for the full duration advertised. You can also keep an eye on our Facebook Jobs page to stay updated with the latest job postings: https://www.facebook.com/LushJobsAUNZ/
We sometimes ask questions in our application form. Be sure to read the questions clearly and answer as best you can, in order to represent yourself as well as possible.
Please upload your resume and cover letter as PDF files. We do love pretty applications, but make sure the file type and size is readable. If an additional task is required for your application, such as a video, please ensure you test the file and/or link to make sure it is working before submitting your application. If you experience any technical issues, please try opening the website using a different browser.
Unfortunately we do not accept email or in-person applications. We only accept applications through our website - it will definitely be seen through this channel!
Previous experience is really valuable. We love people who love our brand but we also love people who have great skills for our business. For different roles we are looking for different types of experience. Make sure you highlight your relevant skills and experience throughout your resume and cover letter. See some examples below:
Sales Assistant: For these roles we look for experience in: retail, sales, customer service, skincare, hair and makeup.
Store Manager: For these roles we look for leadership and retail management experience, particularly in skincare, hair and makeup environments.
Production Assistant: For these roles we look for experience in fast paced, energetic environments like hospitality, warehousing or manufacturing.
If your experience doesn’t quite match up with the role you are applying for, show us why your other skills are relevant to the role. Help us to understand how and why these skills are transferable to the role you are applying for.
Put your best foot forward. What is the thing that makes you stand out above everyone else? We love to hear about your passion for Lush, but what can make you really stand out is telling us what would make you the best employee in the role, and what you can bring to the business. You can also include facts and figures to back up what you are saying. For example, you may want to tell us you have great customer service skills, so think about how you can show this. Have you received specific customer praise? Is there a time you went above and beyond for a customer? Have you received great scores from Mystery Shop reports in previous roles? Tell us all about it!
Our Hiring Managers read hundreds of applications and value concise cover letters where the reason you are the best person for the role is made clear immediately. Although you may feel like you have much to say, try to keep your cover letter to one A4 page for easy reading.
We love to hear about how your values align with ours. Including things that you are passionate about helps us to understand more about how you will fit with the LUSH culture.
Try to stand out visually. We are so lucky to get hundreds upon hundreds of applications at LUSH for every role, and so many of these people are wonderful, however we don’t have roles for everyone. You can stand out by adding colour, personal flair or images. Remember that this is an application for a fun, creative brand. You don’t have to be as conservative as you may be with other businesses. Feel free to make your cover letter shine in whatever way you would like to shine in person!
Ensure that your resume is clear and easy to read. Confusing fonts and too many words can mean a busy Hiring Manager doesn’t get the right information straight away. Keep your resume at 1-2 pages so it is easy to read. Make sure you are honest on your resume and show your true experiences and skills.
Always order work and education history in order of the most recent to the oldest. Making sure things are in chronological order give the impression that you value process and structure in how you communicate. Be sure to separate paid and unpaid work and list what you did in each role. Feel free to include career breaks - you can learn valuable skills on a career break, so let us know if something you did during that time has provided you with extra skills.
Our Hiring Managers often value open and flexible availability. Ensure this is clearly shown on your resume. Be sure to read the job advertisement to see if there are specific times needed to fill the position.
We understand these can be tricky! Not all roles will have this as part of your application, however we generally request them for roles we know get an incredible amount of applications. This enables us to very quickly assess your communication skills, confidence, and what you are like when under pressure. Videos certainly can mimic the pressure you feel when standing in front of a customer on the shop floor and being put on the spot!
Take your time. You don’t have to have ‘A’ grade filming and editing skills as these aren’t skills that make you great on the shop floor, however we do value video applications that looked like time and care was taken to make them. Try to practice a lot before you shoot the video so that your words and nonverbal communication are of the highest standard and you give yourself the best chance.
Many applicants go to great lengths with these videos, so like your cover letter, it is about standing out from the rest. What would make your video stand out? Creativity, clear communication, effort, humour, confidence, product knowledge and brand/ethical values knowledge - all important things for an employee at LUSH.
When requested, a video application is our preference, however we understand some people may not feel comfortable filming themselves or may not have the resources to do so - and that is okay! We are happy for you to submit an alternate application in this instance... However, we still want to see your creativity and passion! You can put together a 1 page 'presentation' which is either written, drawn, or in a creative format of your choosing. This should be on the same topic as the requested video, and be can uploaded as a second page to your cover letter.
Initial Phone Call
For many of our roles, we give some candidates an initial phone call which takes approximately 10 minutes. This gives us a chance to ask a few more questions and to get to know you better. If you have applied for a role, ensure you have voicemail enabled so that if we miss you, you can call us back as soon as possible. If you receive a phone call from us, please ensure you are free from distractions and in a quiet place in order to perform your best. Feel free to let us know if you would like to arrange another time if we don’t call you at the best moment.
We hope this helps you to gain your dream role with LUSH, but because of how competitive nature of our recruitment process that not everyone can be successful. Please don't give up! See how you feel you can improve and try again when you are ready.
